More Books, More Lifetimes

I learned a lot of things from reviewing books. The most important, probably is that reviewing is not just a privilege but a burden as well. Every word in your review can make or break the reputation of a book. However, one shouldn't make reviews to just to please the author, that would be a bigger insult than if degrade their book. Though impartiality is advised and is often called for, a review is still a form of opinion and all opinions are biased. So what's a reviewer to do? My reviewer-sempai told me this, and I paraphrase, "Write a review as honestly as you can but in such a way that you don't insult the author." Ergo, there are always better ways of delivering unsavory news. Try to construct and reconstruct. The Thesaurus is a very handy tool in such a time.

All Hail Emperor GothonAll Hail Emperor Gothon by Dan Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ruthless, unforgiving, and downright evil, Emperor Gothon was built to be hated and despised by the readers in Dan Wright's first book of the Draconica Series, Trapped in Draconica. Several questions like how he ended up like this and if his despicable nature was inborn or if there was some cataclysmic event that triggered it, had risen. All of these, and a couple more you might think of, are answered in this novelette, All Hail Emperor Gothon. This is a darkly realistic and gritty story that reveals how fame and power easily corrupts the fragile human mind. Frank narrative and unexpected plot fills each page revealing Gothon's multi-stage development clearly. The narrative is engaging and easily understood. Each character's unique personalities and characteristics has been unerringly displayed, giving the readers a clear view of what type of person or being those characters were. Due to some dark graphic scenes and the subject matter, this novella might not be for the young reader. Though different from the usual manga influenced books that I have read from this author, the solid story arc, plotting, and characterization made this a highly satisfying read. I have been given an e-book copy of the author. I was not compensated for this review. All conclusions are my own responsibility

Review: Legacy of the Dragonkin by Dan Wright

Legacy of the Dragonkin - Dan Wright, Alexis M. Centeno

Legacy of the DragonkinLegacy of the Dragonkin by Dan Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amazingly addicting, Legacy of Dragonkin is a perfect blend of traditional novel and Japanese style manga. Each character has a comprehensive yet concise background, which gives even the most evil characters importance. Frighteningly hardcore villains have ultra-cool powers. Major characters are stretched to their physical and emotional limits and still manage to survive, keep the feel of shounen: high action, often humorous plotting for male protagonists common in manga. Quips, tear jerker moments and astounding battle scenes abound throughout the story. This story has the feel of the new young-adult model, despite the slightly sexier scenes, and even the adult otakus (persons with obsessive interests in but not limited to manga and anime) will seriously enjoy.

Her Mad Hatter by Marie Hall

Her Mad Hatter - Marie Hall

Her Mad HatterHer Mad Hatter by Marie Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An extremely engrossing and addicting read, this rendition of Alice in Wonderland can probably cause massive fandoms. Marie Hall makes her characters so real, you would seriously doubt if they really are in the real world or not. Having serious problems with mental stability, Mad Hatter is in his way to the point of no return, and only his Alice can save him. His Alice is a descendant of one of his past Alices who was better off as a very bad memory. Following the twists and turns of the multi-dimensional and multi-twisted plot, leaves the reader wanting to know and to read more. References to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie adds to the quirkiness and humor of the book. As the first installment of the Kingdom series, this book whets the reader's appetite for more.

Review: Andrea at the Center by J.P. Kansas

Andrea at the Center - J.P. Kansas

Andrea at the CenterAndrea at the Center by J.P. Kansas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sizzling hot and adventurous, Andrea at the Center dares to explore the human body's capacity to receive and interpret pleasure. Akin to a modern Beauty Series (by Anne Rice), this novel revolves around Andrea, an engaged woman brought unwillingly into the mysterious place of the Center. Within the Center's expansive grounds, Andrea's sensuality was slowly being brought out. Each person she meets gives her a new perspective in pleasure. Almost all aspects of sensuality's taboo has been explored in this novel, and could cater to most readers' individual tastes, and gives a new, curious reader a taste of different kinks. With complete and rational explanations, each new fetish’s sensual and sexual pleasures was explored in depth. Full of fan service and irresistibly sexy scenes, Andrea at the Center introduces, expounds, and entertains readers in the intrinsic art of sensuality.
